Foreigners’ Tough Lesson

NY Post, Jun. 8

June 8, 2004 — Nearly 100 city public-school teachers recruited from Caribbean countries three years ago are getting the boot at the end of the school year because they failed to file requests to extend their visas, Department of Education officials said yesterday.

The teachers were here on work visas, whose maximum three-year limit expired this year.

Department officials said they held meetings with the 98 recruits last year to inform them they had to apply for new visas.

“They did not fill out the necessary paperwork for the Department of State, and will be returning to their country,” the DOE personnel office said.

Another 100 Caribbean teachers did file their paperwork and will teach next year.
