GEORGETOWN — The police in Sussex County say they have recently noticed more and more drivers with either fake or no insurance. They say this growing problem has resulted in many motorists getting away with causing an accident.
In 2004, the Georgetown police reported 458 accidents. The police say at least 50 percent of those accidents involved a motorist with either false or no insurance. So, even if you have insurance and fall victim to an accident, you could still find yourself paying out of you own pocket.
The Georgetown police say that the state of Delaware will not issue a driver’s license to an illegal immigrant. The police say that forces them to get a fake driver’s license with fake insurance. The police say has been a growing number of accidents where fake insurance is exchanged.
The police say that leaves the victim of the accident with no valid information about the other motorist involved. They say no matter how small an accident is, you need to call the police so everything can be verified. Area motorists say this a problem that needs to be solved.
“I think it’s very unfair for any motorist to operate a vehicle without proper insurance due to the fact that I pay insurance,” said motorist Deborah Bailey. “What happens if someone hits me and has no insurance?”
The police say driving without proper insurance can get you into a lot of trouble. It is a minimum $1,500 fine but if you are involved in an accident, the police say there could be numerous charges depending on how bad the accident is.
