Four inmates were hospitalized Wednesday with stab wounds and cuts sustained during a racially charged fight at a state prison just north of the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said. None were critically injured.

Tuesday’s brawl involved about 50 white and black inmates at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility about 25 miles southeast of San Diego. Five housing units were on lockdown while officials interviewed inmates to determine the cause of the melee, said spokeswoman Kim Seibel.

Eight knife-like weapons made from plastic and metal were recovered from the yard, Seibel said.

Inmates from the unit had been involved in a series of racially motivated fights involving white, black and Hispanic inmates that spanned five units at the prison in September, Seibel said.

Those fights prompted the lockdown of five units.
